Several years ago, I had the pleasure of teaching New River Community College distant learning courses in local, state, and federal government at Christiansburg High School.  There were quite a few young people in my courses that particularly stood out as civic minded individuals and they were excited to be able to vote in their first elections.  My hope was that some of what I was teaching them would sink in and they would develop and interest in local government.

I have learned that at least two students from these courses have gone on to be very successful in higher education and I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate them and their families for producing such fine young men.

Troy Akers has gone on to achieve a medical degree and Brendan McDonald has earned a J.D. law degree.  These guys are great people and I hope that come back to Christiansburg to become active and involved in local government and politics someday.  We really need our young people to remain here in our community and help be the leaders of our progressive town.
