I was reading The Roanoke Times this morning while watching it snow, drinking hot chocolate, and definitely not driving. In addition to an editorial about the 70 MPH speed limit that just passed the General Assembly, there is a short article about a bill that would repeal the ban on radar detectors that was just reported out of the House Transportation Committee. My first reaction is, "Are these people who are supposed to represent us trying to kill us?" OK, that's a little over the top, but it does seem that they are intent on making Virginia roads less safe. Why does a driver need a radar detector if following the posted speed limit? Thanks, Democrats, for being bipartisan in these efforts to make our roads more perilous.

The editorial speaks to the political implications of raising the speed limit. Gov. McDonnell is taking credit for a victory in his transportation plan. I agree with the Times that this helps a lot-NOT-all the thousands of commuters caught in gridlock in the more populous regions of the state. McDonnell, who promised to be the 
"transportation governor" is following the Republican meme--don't solve the problem, but spin reality and take credit.
