Before you write me about faith and belief in God, let me emphasize that this post is not about a person’s own spiritual or religious life. It is, however, about politicians who think they have the right to use God as an excuse to do whatever they want to do in their own lives. Read this quote by Sarah Palin from a FOX News interview:
"I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is," she added.
"Even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door.
"And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."
Maybe I’m cynical, but when she decides to run, I think she is going to say that God opened the door for her. What that open door will look like and how she will know it, I’m sure I don’t know, but somehow I think she will tell us that God turned the door knob for her.
Her egocentric arrogance isn’t in the same category (yet) as George Bush starting a war because, as he said, God wanted Iraq to be a democracy, and it was his job to make sure it became a reality. What a mockery of God! George Bush wants us to believe that God told him that Iraq was the country that should be the example of a democracy in the Middle East, and 2003 was the year for it to happen, and given all the people in the world, he was the one God chose to make it happen. Interesting that God must have told him that attacking Iraq was more important than bringing the perpetrators of 9-11 to justice. As I said, excuse my cynicism, but George Bush was said to believe that the “great” presidents were all “war” presidents. Interesting that when politicians invoke God, it’s not about selflessly helping others; rather, it’s always about the aggrandizement or glorification of themselves.
George Bush has caused untold suffering through his belief in his own self-righteousness. Sarah Palin could do the same if we allow her to be placed in a position of power and influence. The “god” these people claim to believe in doesn’t much resemble the God that Jesus represented on earth.
I’ve had enough religious arrogance in a political leader to last a lifetime. As Dubya himself said, fool me once…can’t get fooled again. Let’s hope not.
